California meat packing firm recalls 143M pounds of beef

Sunday, February 17, 2008

I am dismayed at the in-humane handling of cattle that has resulted in the violation of food safety regulations at the Hallmark/Westland Meat Packing Company.

In a press release today, California-based Hallmark/Westland Meat Packing Co. indicated that it has voluntarily recalled just over 143 million pounds (65 million kilograms) of raw and frozen beef products, which is considered to be the largest single recall of beef products in U.S. history. The move follows an investigation by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) into allegations of animal cruelty and mishandling of cattle destined for the human food chain.

The USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) had determined that beef products produced by the Chino, California company were unfit for human consumption as the cattle had not received “complete and proper inspection.”

The recall has been designated as Class II, which the USDA describes as “a health hazard situation where there is a remote probability of adverse health consequences from the use of the product.”

On Friday, Secretary of Agriculture Ed Schafer indicated that charges had been laid against employees of the plant alleged to have taken part in the mistreatment of cattle. “Today [Friday], the San Bernardino District Attorney filed felony animal cruelty charges against two employees who were terminated by Hallmark/Westland Meat Packing Company,” said Schafer. “It is regrettable that these animals were mistreated and I am encouraged and supportive of these actions by the San Bernardino District Attorney in response to this mistreatment.”

The USDA learned of the possible inhumane handling of non-ambulatory (disabled) cattle at the packing plant on January 30 and has since suspended activities at the plant. “We continue to conduct a thorough investigation into whether any violations of food safety or additional humane handling regulations have occurred,” said Secretary Schafer in a press release. “On February 8, our Office of the Inspector General took the lead on the investigation. At that time, USDA extended the administrative hold on Hallmark/Westland Meat Packing Company products for the National School Lunch Program, the Emergency Food Assistance Program and the Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservations while the investigation continues,” said Schafer.

The FSIS reported that Hallmark/Westland had not contacted the FSIS public health veterinarian, as required, when cattle became ill or disabled after undergoing ante-mortem (slaughter) inspection, putting the company out of compliance with FSIS regulations. “Because the cattle did not receive complete and proper inspection FSIS has determined them to be unfit for human food and the company is conducting a recall,” explained Secretary Schafer.

The cruelty charges stem from an undercover video that reportedly showed sick cattle being moved by crews using forklifts.

“Words cannot accurately express how shocked and horrified I was at the depictions contained on the video that was taken by an individual who worked at our facility from October 3 thru November 14, 2007,” said Steve Mendell, President, Westland Meat Co. and Hallmark Meat Packing. “We have taken swift action regarding the two employees identified on the video and have already implemented aggressive measures to ensure all employees follow our humane handling policies and procedures. We are also cooperating with the USDA investigators on the allegations of inhumane handling treatment which is a serious breech of our company’s policies and training.”

The USDA stressed that it is “extremely unlikely” that the cattle involved were at risk for Bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) or mad-cow disease due to the employment of multiple safeguards. The USDA felt the recall was required, however, as the plant had allegedly violated USDA regulations.

The recall involves raw and frozen beef products produced on various dates from February 1, 2006 to February 2, 2008. For further information about the recall, consumers, media, and distributors are encouraged to contact Hallmark/Westland’s Plant Manager Stan Mendell or Food Safety Consultant Steve Sayer at (909) 590-3340 or the FSIS website, www.fsis.usda.gov.

Kenya government fires health worker strikers over failure to ‘report back to work’

Saturday, March 10, 2012

The Kenyan government has dismissed 25,000 striking health workers, mostly nurses, citing failure to heed government orders to recommence work and concern for the welfare of hospital patients. Speaking on behalf of the government, Alfred Mutua stated the workers were dismissed “illegally striking” and “[defying] the directive … to report back to work”, which he called “unethical”. The government asks that “[a]ll qualified health professionals, who are unemployed and/or retired have been advised to report to their nearest health facility for interviews and deployment”, Mutua stated.

The workers, who had been on strike for four days, were wishing to have improvements made to their wages, working conditions, and allowances. The strikes have caused a significant number of Kenyan hospitals to cease operations. According to Kenya Health Professionals Society spokesperson Alex Orina, the average monthly wage plus allowances for health workers in Kenya is KSh25,000 (£193, US$302 or €230) approximately. With an increasing number of reports of patients neglected in hospitals emerging, two trade unions met with the Kenyan government yesterday and negotitated a return to work, although a significant proportion of demonstrators defied the agreement, The Guardian reported.

Orina told Reuters the dismissals were “cat-and-mouse games, you cannot sack an entire workforce. It is a ploy to get us to rush back to work, but our strike continues until our demands are met”. Frederick Omiah, a member of the same society, believed the government’s actions would “make an already delicate and volatile situation worse”, expressing concern that demonstrations may continue in the capital Nairobi, amongst other locations. Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union chairperson Dr. Victor Ng’ani described government actions as “reckless”.

Mutua said the health workers were “no longer employees of the government” and had been eliminated from the payroll. While Ng’ani told the BBC of difficulties with finding other workers as skilled and experienced, Mutua reportedly stated that this would not be an issue. “We have over 100,000 to 200,000 health professionals looking for work today,” Mutua commented. “There will be a lag of a day or two … but it is better than letting people die on the floor, at the gate, or suffer in pain”.

The Next Consortium of ITRI launches ‘RoboScooter’

Sunday, May 11, 2008

At the Pavilion of Taiwan Automotive Research Consortium during the AutoTronics Taipei 2008, in Taipei Time, the Next Consortium of Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) unveiled a brand-new environmental-concept vehicle named “RoboScooter”. It was jointly designed by the Creativity Lab of ITRI, SYM Motors, and the Media Lab of Massachusetts Institute of Technology. This announcement was approved by industrial, governmental, and academical executives, but not just in Taiwan.

The ability for R&D to manufacture the electronic vehicles and bicycles was concerning to several automobile-related industries. There was concern not only from several trade shows, but also international competitions related to the design after winning several prizes back in Taiwan to establish the industrial position and brand image of “Made in Taiwan”. Since several industries like automobile are transformed to high-value industries, “creativity” progressively became a key element before unveiling any new products.

As of this sector, Wen-jean Hsueh (ITRI Creativity Lab General Director) hoped companies could do proper transformations on its R&D nature from “Made in Taiwan” to “Created in Taiwan” for best practice. This not only echoed “OBM” theory discussed at 2007 Taiwan Brands’ Trend Forum but also blended with a key element of production – “creativity”.

On the other side of SYM Motors, to solve the transportation problem for TWTC Nangang, SYM Motors Taiwan imported manufacturing technology from Kinglong Bus Co., Ltd. to manufacture several 4th-cycle low floor buses and sell them to Chung-hsing Bus Co., Ltd. and Kwang-huang Bus Co., Ltd. In this launch, the SYM Motors Taiwan hope this vehicle is energy-efficiency, easily-parked, and has creative functions which can improve the transportation habits of individuals.

How To Use Free Ad Websites For Profits!

By Kenneth Echie

Do you lack the advertising budget of the gurus? Are you struggling to put your product or website in front of customers?

Its a good thing you found this article. This article will share with you one of the free ways I use to put my products and websites in front of my customers.

I use free ad websites to advertise quite a bit. Like some of you, I dont have big ad budget. I have found free ad websites handy in my internet pursuit.

When I say free ad website, I do not mean Free For All (FFA) websites. FFA websites were once effective way of advertising on the internet, but people have abused them so much that they are now of no value.

I suggest you stay away from them.

You still see a lot of them around because newbies still fall for them. When I was a newbie, I did fall for them. The horror I wish not to discuss

Below are the benefits of free ad websites and how they can put money in your pocket:

a) The good ones have high traffic and are highly ranked in the search engines. So people will get to see what you are selling as they visit these highly ranked websites. If you have a good ad, your product will sell.

b) They provide backlinks to your website. Backlinks help your website rank high in the search engines.

c) Some of them have good pagerank and can transfer some their pagerank to your website. If you dont know what pagerank is, dont worry. The only thing you need to know is that it helps your websites ranking in the search engines.

d) Since the search engines highly regard some of the good ones, your ad can rank high in the search engines. I had this happen top me. The ad for my website was ranked higher than my website. This will translate into sales when people looking for your product visit your website.

Do not discount the effectiveness of free ad websites. The method is so highly effective that I know an e-book on the market right now teaching this method and similar methods. It sells for some pretty pennies. I cover this method and more in my Zero Cost Profits report (see my resources box below).

Police in South Africa clashed with thousands of demonstrators in two communities east of the city of Johannesburg on Tuesday.

The demonstrators, who were protesting poor housing conditions and lack of public services, had blockaded roads and set a municipal office in the town of Belfast on fire.

Riot police responded by firing rubber bullets and tear gas at the protesters to restore order, and arrested several residents.

Two police officers were injured after some of the residents started to throw stones at security officials.

Residents also clashed with security officials in several other towns in the area. Several people in Standerton, a town located southeast of Johannesburg, were hurt following a conflict with police officers.

Irish Finance Minister Donohoe criticises OECD’s global minimum corporate tax rate

Friday, April 23, 2021

On Tuesday, Finance Minister of Ireland Paschal Donohoe criticised talks co-ordinated by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) for a global minimum corporate tax rate, arguing smaller countries like Ireland “need to be able to use tax policy as a legitimate lever to compensate for the real, material and persistent advantage enjoyed by larger countries”.

Speaking to virtual attendees at a virtual seminar about international tax, Donohoe said any deal must “accommodate Ireland’s 12.5% rate”. This 12.5% rate benefits large corporations including Apple, Google and Facebook which account for one in eight jobs in the country. According to CNBC, corporate tax receipts in Ireland totalled €11.8 billion in 2020, and the Department of Finance has projected, according to The Irish Times that figure increase from €11.6 billion in 2021 to €12.5 billion by 2025.

Donohoe also said Ireland’s low taxes serve as an incentive to attract jobs and investment, saying while he supported an agreement with “appropriate and acceptable tax competition”, it must be lower than the 21% proposed by the United States.

Donohoe said nations should recognise the low tax rates present in Ireland and other small countries, citing “advantages of scale, location, resources, industrial heritage” present in larger ones. Defending his own long-established rate, Donohoe said a 12.5% rate is “within the ambit of healthy tax competition” as a rate which “stimulate[s] investment, growth and innovation, which are core to Ireland’s industrial policy”. According to The Guardian, current proposals would shrink Ireland’s corporate tax base by 20%; and tax receipts to be €2 billon lower than it would otherwise be in 2025, per Irish Department of Finance.

Brian Keegan, the director of public policy at Chartered Accountants Ireland said it was “not tax change, it’s political change”. Head of tax for the OECD Pascal Saint-Amans said “there is a new dynamic that is likely to bring us to a resolution”, and the US’ willingness to address expressed concerns simplifies an admittedly-complex blueprint.

A spokesperson for the Irish Department of Finance told CNBC on Monday “political level discussions on these issues have not yet taken place”.

The Guardian reported many companies in Ireland pay less on revenues as compared to other countries; with Apple paying as little as 0.005% in 2014. A European Commission ruling in 2016 ordered Apple to pay €13 billion it owed back taxes to the Government of Ireland ; it was struck down in July on the grounds “[t]he commission did not succeed in showing to the requisite legal standard that there was an advantage.”

Serviced Apartments Shanghai, China}

Submitted by: Philipp Tuck

Nowadays in many countries, high-end serviced apartment represents not only a luxury mode of life, but rather the fame and gain and status of its residents. Indeed, high-end serviced residences have developed to be major housing style in big cities across the world, especially those cities with prime locations or beautiful sceneries, like New York, Tokyo, Singapore – and Shanghai. The fact that high-end serviced apartment is largely distributed over the big cities with dense population and developed economy indicates that it is becoming a necessary living style for people there. Under Chinas current home purchase restrictions, between the house in the suburbs and the serviced apartment in downtown area, most high-end consumers will unhesitatingly choose the latter.

High-end serviced apartment located in the heart of a big city often occupies the top of the pyramid in terms of the house price or rent. And its residents tend to be the elites from around the world. Living in the most prosperous part of the city, the residents of serviced apartment can enjoy the best of what the city has to offer and are also able to be at their office in next to no time.

Serviced apartments originated in Europe and then proceeded to thrive and abound in New York in 1980. The appearance of serviced apartment in China has been accompanied by the large foreign investment, a case especially in Shanghai. In the early 1990s, Pudong New District development attracted a lot of foreign investment and the foreign investors then had to choose high-end hotels as their working and living places owing to the lack of high-end residential quarters and modern office buildings in those days. Hence in the late 1990s there appeared the first batch of serviced apartments geared to the needs of administrative staff of foreign companies set up in Shanghai. By 2017, serviced apartments are a main pillar of the city’s real estate market. Famous hotel brands like Kempinski and the Mariott offer long-term packages, major apartment complexes provide comprehensive household services.

Home is always the source of power and a cozy haven in our journey through life. As the pace of life in the city speeds up, people are facing more work-related stress, and “home” has thus become a perfect haven of heart and soul. Actually, when choosing a place for living, people nowadays give priority to those residential quarters that can provide comprehensive community service and bring one the feeling of being at home. And as one representative of this kind of residential quarters, the serviced apartment is drawing wide attention.

Struggling with costs and stress brought about by the time and traffic, more elites with high incomes realize that luxury residents like villas outside the city can no longer meet their living needs, what they long for now is a home endowed with both prosperity and comfort, enabling them to move about inside the city and stay connected with their social circle. And therein lies the meaning of the high-end serviced apartment to the urban elite families. To live luxuriously in the downtown area, one may find that only serviced apartment can best meet people’s living requirements.

Compared with the status brought by the luxurious villas, high-end serviced apartments are more concerned with family atmosphere and the convenience of life. We might say that the high-end serviced apartment has started another mode of luxury residential living.
