New York Governor introduces same-sex marriage bill

Thursday, April 16, 2009

New York’s governor David Paterson introduced a bill Thursday into the state legislature to legalize marriage between same-sex couples, although it appears to lack the necessary support in the state senate.

Governor of New York David Paterson.
For too long, the gay and lesbian communities have been told their rights and freedoms have to wait.

“For too long, the gay and lesbian communities have been told their rights and freedoms have to wait”, said Gov. Paterson. “The time has come to bring marriage equality to the State of New York.”

The legislation would give same-sex couples 1,300 to 1,400 rights that don’t exist unless a couple is married, he said.

Of the four states in which same-sex marriage is presently legal — Vermont, Iowa, Massachusetts, and Connecticut — only Vermont has legalized marriage within the state legislature. The other three states have determined through the courts that the prohibition of same-sex marriage was not allowed under their state constitutions.

Yoga Vs. Pilates}

Yoga vs. Pilates

by

Yoga and pilates have both became very popular over the last decade. You are constantly hearing about them all over the media and in magazines. The question is, are they interchangeable? Are they the same thing? The answer is NO. Both exercises utilize the mind but they are very different. The difference between yoga and pilates is both physical and philosophical. The correct choice for which is a better exercise completely depends on your goals and what you want for your body.

Yoga is an ancient Easter-based exercise approach that is dated back more than 5,000 years ago. Yoga involves integrating the body, mind and spirit. Yoga encourages individuals to seek balance in their lives. This balanced is achieved and maintained through exercise, breathing and meditation. The focus of Yoga is to keep the body strong through controlled strengthening of all muscles and stretching. A yoga exercise routine involves stationary movements, flexibility and breathing techniques to calm the mind while strengthening the body. While performing this exercise you will only need a yoga mat and sometimes bands. Yoga requires no specific workout equipment, only a mat. Yoga is a very relaxing and peaceful exercise. It is a great stress reliever! Yoga is much more relaxing and calming than Pilates.

Pilates was created in 1920’s by Joseph Pilates, who created the exercise to help World War I soldiers recover from injuries. Pilates is a Western-based approach that concentrates specifically on building the strength of the bodys core muscle group, which includes the abdominal area and muscles surrounding the spine. Pilates unlike Yoga can be done on specific pilates workout equipment or as a series of mat exercises. Pilates main goal is toning your muscles effectively and improving your core strength. It is a great exercise to improve posture and a great way to get long lean muscles. During a pilates workout routine there is not as much emphasis on flexibility as there is on toning your muscles. That is one of the major differences between yoga and pilates.

To find out which is a better exercise for you, research each exercise routine and decide what goals you have and what you would like to accomplish for your body and mind.

Marussia F1 test driver Maria de Villota seriously injured in testing accident

Tuesday, July 3, 2012

Logo of the Marussia F1 team.

The Marussia F1 team’s test driver, Spaniard María de Villota, was taken to hospital by air ambulance today after a collision in testing at Duxford Aerodrome.

At the end of her first installation run, the car she was driving had a low-speed collision with the loading ramp of the team’s support truck. According to BBC Cambridgeshire presenter Chris Mann, the car “suddenly accelerated” into the rear of the vehicle. The Marussia team released a statement an hour and a half after the accident, stating that she had been transferred to hospital, and a further statement would be issued once her condition had been assessed.

A spokesman for the East of England ambulance service, Gary Sanderson, said de Villota had “[…] sustained life-threatening injuries and following treatment at the scene by paramedics, she has been taken to Addenbrooke’s Hospital for further care.” According to witnesses, she was motionless for about fifteen minutes as medical teams attended to her, but did move her hands before being taken away from the test track. Medical charity Magpas, whose volunteer paramedics attended the accident, reported she had sustained injuries to her head and face, and was in a ‘stable condition’ when she reached the hospital.

Marussia reported her as conscious later in the afternoon: “Since Maria’s arrival at the hospital at approximately 10.45am this morning, she has been receiving the best medical attention possible at the hospital, which is the region’s major trauma centre. Maria is conscious and medical assessments are ongoing. The team will await the outcome of these assessments before providing further comment. The team’s first priority at this time is Maria and her family.”

De Villota was announced as Marussia’s test driver in March, having prior experience driving for Alan Docking Racing in Superleague Formula in Spain.

Dr Shah.Com: Guidelines For Safe Plastic Surgery Reduce Risk With Research And Smart Selection

DrShah.com: Guidelines for Safe Plastic Surgery–Reduce Risk with Research and Smart Selection

by

Dr Darshan Shah, MD, FACS

In the last year, a couple of tragic incidents involving patients undergoing cosmetic surgery have caught the attention of news sources. While these incidents are incredibly rare, especially given that over 11 million cosmetic procedures were performed last year, they have been broadcasted wide-scale by media outlets, thereby creating concern and confusion in the minds of those considering cosmetic surgery.

As a plastic surgeon, mentor, and patient-safety advocate, I believe it is our job to help the public understand what is behind these sad and senseless tragedies and how they can protect themselves against complications, to nearly ensure a safe surgical experience.

Under-Qualified Surgeons

Last November, news broke of the untimely death of Dr. Donda West, mother of musician Kanye West. After undergoing a breast reduction, tummy tuck, and liposuction performed by a COSMETIC SURGEON (not a plastic surgeon), West passed away the following day from what the LA County Coroner has called coronary artery disease and multiple post-operative factors due to or as a consequence of liposuction and mammoplasty (sic). This death immediately sent potential patients running scared, as they asked themselves questions regarding the safety of plastic procedures: Is surgery really that dangerous? If a celebrity surgeon can contribute to a death, who can be trusted?

To begin with, the doctor was not board eligible or board certified in plastic surgery, and even worse, had been sued numerous times for medical malpractice; furthermore, at the time of the incident, he was facing allegations of sexual battery. Finally, given West\’s age (58) and rumored history of heart disease, the doctor should have, quite possibly, never performed the surgery in the first place. It is an industry-accepted safety precaution to require patients over age 50, or those who have any health issues whatsoever, to receive approval from their primary care physician before undergoing surgery.

Underprepared Facilities

A second tragedy highlights the importance of not only thoroughly researching the surgeon, but of assessing the qualifications of the facility itself in providing emergency care.

In March of 2008, 18-year-old high school student Stephanie Kuleba passed away during surgery at an outpatient center in Boca Raton, Florida while attempting to correct asymmetrical breasts and an inverted areola. Nearly two hours into the procedure, she developed symptoms of the rare malignant hyperthermia (MH) and was rushed to nearby Delray Medical Center, where she died tragically 24 hours later.

Again, what makes this incident even more distressing is the avoidable nature of the outcome: MH is an extremely uncommon, inherited disorder in which certain agents found in anesthesia trigger a catastrophically elevated body temperature that can reach up to 110 degrees Fahrenheit. And while most surgeons have never encountered a case, if it is triggered, and the proper protocol is not followed, MH can result in rapid death.

However, the key word here is can. When cosmetic surgeries are performed in an outpatient setting properly certified in emergency procedures, the surgeon and staff are specifically trained to treat complications like MH for which there is a known antidote and the facility itself stocked with the proper dosage of lifesaving drugs. Had the center where Kuleba was located been certified by an ambulatory-accreditation agency, such as the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC), this tragedy would have almost certainly been averted.

Guidelines for Safe Surgery

While researching a surgeon\’s training and the certification of the surgical center are the cornerstones of keeping yourself safe, I share with potential patients the following comprehensive guidelines for undergoing cosmetic surgery safely and stress free:

1. Visit websites like the American Board of Plastic Surgery (www.abplsurg.com) or American College of Surgeons (www.facs.org) to see where a surgeon stands in terms of qualifications. Make sure you choose a well trained PLASTIC SURGEON, someone who has had general surgery or OMF/ENT training, then a formal 2 or 3 year plastic surgery training program OR a full 6-7 year plastic surgery training program. Many cosmetic surgeons take weekend courses and are not board certified or eligible plastic surgeons. In fact, many cosmetic surgeons don\’t even have the background or training in surgery that makes a safe plastic surgeon. So research, ask questions, and be careful.

2. Meet the (wo)man!

While some may argue that you don\’t need to click on a personal level to have a safe surgical experience, feeling comfortable with your doctor is actually an important consideration: If you feel at ease, you are more likely to address your fears and ask the questions that will paint the fullest picture of the doctor\’s competencies. Furthermore, there are certain red flags to look for such as a doctor who seems to be persuading you to have a surgery or who actively pushes additional procedures. When meeting a potential surgeon, the vibe you should be getting is one of caution, no matter what the procedure. Ask questions like how many of this procedure have you done? Have you had complications? How many?

3. Ask about AAAHC or other ambulatory surgery center accreditation.

As discussed above, ensuring your safety is not just about the surgeon. Make sure to ask about a center\’s emergency (or ambulatory ) accreditation; either the AAAHC or the American Association for Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgery Facilities (AAAASF) are the ones to look for, as both mean that the facility has met stringent regulations for providing emergency care, and it\’s surgeons and support staff have undergone intensive education and practice drills to ensure patients are protected should a complication arise. Be extremely wary about doing your procedure in a simple office setting environment. Without AAAHC, AAAASF or DHS accreditation and a certified anesthesia provider, you should be very hesitant to have a procedure performed in this setting.

4. A medical exam is a must.

Any qualified surgeon will require a patient to undergo a full medical evaluation prior to surgery if you have any health issues or are over the age of 50, and will review the results personally. If your doctor discredits the need for a full workup or simply takes your word that you are in good health, you need to find another doctor. And disappointing as it may be, if the results of your exam indicate you are not a good candidate for cosmetic surgery, heed the warning and don\’t go doctor shopping until you find a surgeon who\’ll agree to perform the procedure. Ignoring this warning is one of the most common causes of disaster.

5. Follow the doctor\’s orders.

There are good reasons doctors give instructions prior to surgery; ignore them and you may be putting your life in peril. Whether it\’s quitting smoking or avoiding alcohol or aspirin, when it comes to pre-operative orders, caution is king.

6. Be honest with your surgeon.

This should go without saying, but it is extremely risky to withhold information about your medical history in an effort to get your doctor to approve a surgery. Even if you think it\’s irrelevant, be sure to disclose all medical conditions (past or present), prior surgeries, and medications or drug use your doctor is bound by the laws of confidentiality, so disclose everything to avoid danger.

7. Be honest with yourself.

While this is not so much a matter of safety as it is psychological health, the best way to assure a positive outcome is to be honest with yourself (and your doctor) regarding your expectations. Cosmetic surgery is not to be taken lightly; make sure you identify the reasons you desire a procedure, assess what you feel will change as a result, and verify that your goals regarding the surgery are realistic. For example, liposuction or breast enhancement may boost your confidence at the beach, but they will not address underlying depression or solve interpersonal issues.

So what we tell patients is really three things: First of all, cosmetic surgery is not something that should be entered into haphazardly; it can provide enormous benefits for the right candidate, but requires serious consideration. Secondly, the best way to protect yourself is to do your own research prior to even meeting a potential surgeon. And finally, if you have followed the first two pointers, you can relax; plastic surgery itself actually carries minimal risk when you put yourself in the hands of a qualified, certified, plastic surgery specialist – someone who has trained and devoted their career to the field of plastic and reconstructive surgery.

The FOX Morning News broadcast from Harvard Square this morning in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Anchors Liz Carrigan and Gene Lavanchy profiled a restaurant and a musician who will take part in the 22nd annual Mayfair, which starts on Sunday, May 1. The restaurant, Grafton Street, is on Massachusetts Avenue.

The Mayfair is a festival that takes place in Harvard Square on an annual basis. On Sunday, the Square will be closed from noon until 6 pm to vehicular traffic; according to the Mayfair website, “200 artists and merchants” will participate in the event this year.

The musician, Halsey Burgund, works for a computer security firm, but plays the drums and piano in his spare time. This morning, he had set up his portable recording booth to demonstrate the means by which he records passersby for voice samples in his music. Burgund will have his booth set up on Sunday and hopes to record festival visitors. Eventually, Burgund hopes to release his music under a Creative Commons license. Burgund noted that he previously tried recording people on the street with just a microphone, but he found that there was too much ambient noise for the quality of recording he desired.

SEPTA buys rail cars from NJ Transit to deal with crowding

Tuesday, July 29, 2008

As gas prices have risen in the United States, the regional transport authority for southeastern Pennsylvania, SEPTA, has seen a sharp increase in ridership, which has caused overcrowding on the trains.

“As fuel prices have continued to rise, SEPTA ridership has steadily increased and is the highest in 18 years,” said SEPTA General Manager Joseph Casey. Monthly ridership was 22 percent higher last month than a year ago.

“They have crushed loads on their rail lines, already where people are standing, and there’s not enough seats,” said Rich Bickel, the director of the Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission.

“At peak times some railcars are standing room only and commuter parking lots are nearly full. All Regional Rail lines are running near full capacity and the train station parking lots are at about 90 percent capacity or more,” SEPTA spokesperson Felipe Suarez said.

While SEPTA awaits new Silverliner V trains from Hyundai Rotem, which begin arriving in 2009, it had hoped to lease eight rail cars from New Jersey Transit, at an agreed-upon rate of US$10,000 per month. However, due to problems with insurance and liability indemnification, the deal fell through, according to Casey.

SEPTA has entered a new agreement to purchase the eight rail cars from NJ Transit. The transit authority will pay US$670,000 for the cars and assorted supplies plus one additional inoperative car which will be used for spare parts. The rail cars will be operated using a SEPTA provided locomotive as they are not self-propelled.

The cars are being disposed of by NJ Transit because it has switched from single-floor cars to double-decker cars.

SEPTA is expecting to raise US$3.1 million by selling rail that has been out of service since 1981 at auction.

Proud Boys chapter leader pleads guilty in US Capitol attack

Sunday, April 10, 2022

On Friday, leader of the North Carolina chapter of the Proud Boys organization Charles Donohoe pleaded guilty to charges of conspiracy to obstruct the United States Congress and assault of an officer of the law, both felonies, on January 6, 2021.

Donohoe’s plea was part of a bargain in which he also agreed to cooperate with federal prosecutors’ investigations of the Proud Boys and its leadership. Other alleged leaders, including national chairman Enrique Tarrio, have entered not guilty pleas on charges of seditious conspiracy. According to prosecutors, they were members of an elite group of leaders called the “Ministry of Self Defense” and hand-picked by Tarrio.

Prosecutors’ filings also said Donohoe supplied the Proud Boys with radio transmitters, so they could communicate before and during the 2021 attack on the Capitol. Tarrio was arrested two days before the riot. Immediately after Tarrio’s arrest, Donohoe deleted the group’s messages on the Telegram communication platform and messaged that plans might be compromised. “Well at least they won’t get our boots on the ground plan because we are one step ahead of them,” he wrote in a follow-up.

Donohoe reportedly never entered the Capitol, even though he was in the first wave of people descending upon the building, as he was overcome by pepper spray. Nevertheless, his assault charges stemmed from throwing two water bottles at Capitol Police officers. He allegedly also sent messages stating: “We stormed the capitol unarmed … we took it over.”

The assault on the Capitol took place while Congress was certifying the results of the 2020 presidential election won by Joe Biden. The Proud Boys were in favor of a second term for former president Donald Trump.

Four killed as missile strikes aircraft carrying Ivory Coast PM Guillaume Soro

Saturday, June 30, 2007

The Prime Minister of the Ivory Coast, Guillaume Soro, has escaped uninjured after a missile struck his aircraft upon landing at Bouaké Airport, Ivory Coast, killing four others, according to eyewitnesses.

According to a United Nations (UN) employee who saw the attack, a total of three missiles were fired. One struck and rebounded off the fuselage and failed to explode, one flew over the top of the aircraft and exploded nearby and one burst through the fuselage and exploded inside the cabin. There were also some gunshots fired.

Shortly after the attack, the Forces Nouvelles de Côte d’Ivoire (New Forces of the Ivory Coast) announced several arrests had been made in connection to the failed assassination attempt.

One male New Forces administrative assistant from on board the plane who refused to be identified spoke to the media via telephone from a local hospital where he was being treated for an injury to his arm, and gave the following account of the attack: “There was an explosion and it was panic. The plane had just landed and we waited until the plane came to a stop. We tried to calm people down until the plane stopped…Those who fired must have been in the bush. I didn’t see anyone. I don’t know if anyone saw them.”

Allan Aliali, a journalist on board to cover the arrival of Soro, described seeing three dead bodies in the plane, but was unable to identify them. This was later confirmed by New Forces spokesman Sidiki Konate, who said a fourth victim died later from his injuries.

A planned ceremony to mark the official return of magistrates to the north under an Ivory Cost peace deal went ahead as scheduled, after which Konate told reporters “Be assured, the most important thing for us is to advance in this peace process and nothing can stop us. This process cannot be assassinated,”.

Currently, there is a military buffer zone splitting the country in two and policed by the UN, but a new peace deal in March is leading to progress in dismantling it.

The UN security council condemned the attack, and urged all involved in the current power conflict to respect the peace deal there. United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon also gave his personal condemnation of the attack, saying that the peace deal “represents a unique opportunity for a peaceful solution to the protracted Ivorian crisis.” The UN security council said it condemned and any attempt to destabilize the peace process by force” and that “The perpetrators of this criminal act must be brought to justice…(it is) critical that all parties continue to work within the framework of the March 4 peace agreement.”

Security was stepped up in Bouaké after the attack, with a security cordon set up around the New Forces headquarters, troops deployed at the airport and roadblocks set up at various points across the city. Meanwhile, in London and New York prices for cocoa, which the Ivory Coast is the biggest supplier of, rose to their highest levels in four years as news of the attack came through.

International Crisis Group analyst Gilles Yabi said of the attack “It’s too soon to know who was responsible, but clearly we’re thinking about people in Soro’s own movement who are not happy with the way things have turned out…The agreement was a real step forward in the peace process, but it was still fragile because the (citizen) identification process had not yet begun…and of course because of tensions in the rebel [New Forces] camp”.
