There are many instances where a person needs a new tooth to replace an old tooth lost due to some injury, disease or any other reason. This process of pacing an artificial tooth rod into ones jaw for the purpose of providing support to the new tooth which would be placed as a replacement or for making a bridge is called dental implant.

The process of dental implant requires the combined effort of the dentist and the periodontist. The implant will be placed in consultation with you. The decision of how and where the implant will be placed is taken by the dentist and the periodontist only after consulting with the patient. Each patient has certain specific conditions which have to be kept in mind while deciding on the treatment plan. Based on the type of implant chosen by the patient, the doctor and the periodontist will devise the treatment plan which shall be tailor made to suit a specific patients need only. The simplest and the easiest procedure is the replacement of a single tooth. One implant and a single crown will do the trick in cases where only one tooth is missing. A little complicated are the cases where several teeth have to be replaced. Implant supported bridges have to be build in order to replace many teeth. An extreme case, usually observed in old age patients is where the entire denture needs to be replaced. Full implant or full bridges need to be put in order to replace the entire set of teeth.

The quality and quantity of the bone in the area where the implant has to be done is a very important factor affecting the success of the implant. The bone quality and quantity is least around the upper back jaw. Implants in this area become even more complicated due to the fact it is very close to the sinus. However proximity to sinus can work to an advantage where due to sinus augmentation, the sinus floor rises and bone get developed which end up helping in the implant procedure. Another factor which makes the implant procedure difficult is the deformities in the upper and lower jaws. These deformities end up reducing the bone available for the implant. This problem can be solved by lifting the gum from the ridges and exposing the bony defect. The defect is then taken care of by either filling in with bone or by building up the ridge support through bone substitution. Ridge modification not only helps in improving the appearance of the individual but also increases the chances of the implant being successful. Implants done after ridge modification have been seen to last for quite a few years.

After the implant it is essential to take good care of your teeth. It is advised that one should ask their doctor or periodontist to prepare a good dental care plan post an implant. Implanted teeth are same as original teeth and hence in order to stay clean require daily brushing and flossing. Periodic follow up sessions with the dentist are also advised.
