Basic Computer Skills Training

Basic Computer Skills Training

by

jonefloyd

The increasing use of computers at practically all levels, whether personal or professional has intensified the need to increase computer literacy amongst developing nations as it could be a key to reducing poverty. As more and more employers list basic computer skills, training in this field has gained momentum. Workers are trying to update their skills or risk becoming obsolete in this age of information technology, as every industry is relying on the use of computers to decrease costs and increase efficiency.

The Government\’s Dilemma:

Governments often fail to address low rates of computer literacy as mostly departments are focused on developing the infrastructure on a macro level versus tackling it in small amounts. In countries where literacy levels are in single digits, providing basic computer skills training is a conundrum in itself as resources have to be allocated to mutually exclusive projects such as amongst building schools in an entire province or building a few schools equipped with computer labs. Although seemingly unfair, economists argue that the latter objective should be pursued, as it will allow the qualified students to become productive citizens and contribute to state resources and form a chain. Otherwise, children with only basic education would be marginalized and the state would lose out on potential taxes.

Solution:

As a result, many organizations including NGO\’s and the corporate sector are providing basic computer skills training to the impoverished people so they are not further sidelined by those more competitive than them. In order to break this vicious cycle, Microsoft initiated such a Corporate Social Responsibility project in South Africa. As a part of the campus licensing agreement, Microsoft will provide training to tertiary students free of cost. This was received with skepticism amongst critics, and was called out as a shrewd marketing strategy, but the company defended itself and defended that the move was to improve computer literacy rates in the country.

India, a country where almost 400 million people live on less than $1 per day, has also seen an increase in its IT sector. The wealthy entrepreneurs of this country have resolved to introduce their poverty stricken country men to basic computer skills training as a means to empower them and improve their lifestyles.

Aggregate Benefits:

Thus an increase in investment in this sector by wealthy residents and expatriates is often a more successful way of alleviating this problem. When people acquire basic computer skills training, it makes them more competent not only amongst their peers in their local environment, but also by using the computer and the internet to gain information and seek better job opportunities. A person who has well-developed computer skills is often able to add more value to his employing organization and thus increases his self worth. At a time when resources are scarce and expensive, all businesses are seeking to reduce costs, and therefore computerizing their processes is the best way to increase efficiency. As more invest is made in computerized equipment, the demand for computer literate people will increase, making this a lucrative skill to possess.\”

Guatemalan Supreme Court approves impeachment of President Molina

Wednesday, August 26, 2015

Yesterday in Guatemala, the Supreme Court approved the attorney general’s request to impeach President Otto Pérez Molina.

The final decision on lifting Presidential immunity now falls to Congress. The case relates to a corruption scandal known locally as La Linea ((en))English language: ?The Line which has seen Vice President Roxana Baldetti arrested and charged with fraud and receiving bribes. Prosecutors allege Baldetti and Molina between them received half of all bribes in the case.

Congress previously refused to impeach Molina but the investigation has since broadened, with ministerial resignations. Molina, however, has stood firm in the face of widespread popular protests demanding he leave office. Elections are scheduled for September 6.

The Social and Popular Assembly, formed during protests in recent months, allege violations of electoral law by many parties, and want an electoral commission crackdown. One member organisation, the Committee for Campesino Unity, wants a delay until elections are reformed. They also seek a new constitution.

Molina is accused of conspiring to corruptly divert customs funds. He denies any misconduct.

27 believed dead in Indonesian plane crash

Saturday, May 7, 2011

Officials say 27 people are dead after a plane crashed into the sea off east Indonesia today. Fifteen bodies have been recovered and it is thought the others on board have sunk with the wreckage.

“I can confirm that all the passengers were killed when the plane exploded as it crashed into the sea,” an Indonesian navy official told local radio station ElShinta. He said around ten navy divers were sent to the Papua crash site 400 metres off-shore in six kilometres of water but “had difficulties locating them [trapped passengers] due to strong currents and limited equipment.”

I can confirm that all the passengers were killed when the plane exploded as it crashed into the sea

Merpati Nusantara Airlines has not confirmed passenger numbers. A transport ministry spokesman said the ministry is “still checking on the passengers’ situation,” adding “the weather was pretty bad at the time [of the crash].” Built by the Aviation Industry Corporation of China, the propellor-driven MA60 was 500 metres from a runway when it crashed, according to airport officials.

The nation of islands has heavy use of aviation and a poor safety record, including the crash of an Adam Air jet in 2007 that killed 102 people near Sulawesi. The European Commission had banned all Indonesian airlines from entering it, but two years ago flag carrier Garuda Indonesia was deemed to have improved and allowed to enter.

In the spirit of US Thanksgiving tradition, two turkeys receive presidential pardon

Thursday, November 22, 2007

On Tuesday, the press and members of the National Turkey Federation gathered in large numbers at the White House’s Rose Garden in the United States to witness an annual Thanksgiving tradition in the U.S., a presidential pardon of two Thanksgiving turkeys.

Every year, a U.S. President gives a pardon to two turkeys, saving them from being put on a dinner table somewhere in America. This year, President George W. Bush pardoned two turkeys named May and Flower, who were both chosen for the pardon by the citizens of the U.S.

“Each of you is taking part in a tradition that goes back to the days of Harry Truman. And to paraphrase Harry today, we have a message for our two feathered friends: You cannot take the heat — and you’re definitely going to stay out of the kitchen. I thank everybody who voted online to choose the names for our guests of honor. And I’m pleased to announce the winning names [May and Flower]. [These names are] certainly better than the names the vice president suggested, which was Lunch and Dinner,” Bush said jokingly.

After receiving the pardons, the turkeys got a special ride in a three-car motorcade to Dulles Airport, which included an array of lights, sirens and police motorcycles. From there, both turkeys were flown to Orlando, Florida on a plane dubbed United Turkey One where they were the Grand Marshalls for today’s Thanksgiving Day parade in Walt Disney World. Both turkeys received a welcome which included a red carpet, and free passes to the park.

“So now I have a task, and that is to grant a full presidential pardon to May and Flower. They’ll be shortly flown to Disney World, where they will serve as Honorary Grand Marshals for the Thanksgiving Day Parade. I hope that honor doesn’t go to their head. May they live the rest of their lives in blissful gobbling. And may all Americans enjoy a holiday full of love and peace. God bless you all,” added Bush.

Signs Of A Good Quality Shirt

By Clair O’Hara

Nothing makes a man look better than a good quality shirt, whether it’s for business, casual wear or an evening out, men want to look good in a properly-fitted shirt. Below are a few tips to help you look out for the signs of a good quality shirt – sometimes it’s better to empty the wallet on a designer brand that will last years, rather than a throw-away fashion piece that will be binned before the season is out.

Material

Most quality shirts are 100% cotton, but that doesn’t mean a small percentage of man-made fibres is necessarily bad – they tend to help with the durability and stretch of the shirt – but anything more than 5-10% man-made fibre is a sign of cheap manufacturing and not skilled labour. You can usually tell good quality just by feeling the fabric but if you don’t have an eye for quality, take a look at the inside label for fabric percentages.

Stitching

It’s fairly easy to spot quality stitching once you know the signs to look out for, and especially when you place a badly stitched item next to a quality one. Firstly, and most obviously, the stitching should be neat and clean, there should be no loops, which means the stitching is loose and will fray easily, and there shouldn’t be any loose strands anywhere on the garment. Seams around the shoulder should be thicker for easy shoulder movement, and there should be stitching to support the back (the yoke, more on this later…).

Buttons

Buttons on a shirt should be stitched on securely, try giving them a little pull (but not too much of one) to ensure they are securely fastened. If they feel loose and easy to pull away, chances are they’ve been sewn on haphazardly (and probably in a sweatshop).

Plastic buttons are usually used on cheaper shirts, mother of pearl buttons are normally a sign of better quality and they are cross-stitched to keep them secure.

Stripes and Print

If you are looking stripey shirts or shirts with prints on, all patterns should be aligned throughout the shirt. For example, if the shirt is striped, the stripes should be aligned from collar right down to cuff, if the stripes don’t correspond or look wonky it’s a sign of bad craftsmanship.

Yoke

The yoke is efficient stitching designed to make you feel more comfortable and to give you room to move your back and shoulders. Quality shirts usually have a split shoulder yoke – the stitching is sewn a few centimetres down from the collar (on the back of the shirt) and then sewn across the back forming two separate shoulder compartments. This accommodates for comfortable back and shoulder movement.

Collar

The collar should have no bubbles or wrinkles, if there are any, this is a sign of a low quality shirt and should be avoided!

Spend

Sometimes it’s better to fork out on quality and believe it or not, it can be a more economical choice. If you purchase a cheap throw-away fashion shirt, its quality means it will more than likely only last one season. Whereas if you spend more and purchase a quality-made shirt, it will last you season upon season.

Borussia M’Gladbach sacks coach Schubert; appoints Hecking

Friday, December 23, 2016

Yesterday, German football club Borussia Mönchengladbach announce their appointment of Dieter Hecking as manager until 2019. Hecking’s predecessor André Schubert was sacked the day before, after one year of service at Borussia Park.

Mönchengladbach has won only one out of its last eleven Bundesliga matches this season. Schubert began as an interim manager of the first team after Lucien Facts resigned from the coach position last September. Schubert led Gladbach to the fourth spot in Bundesliga. Schubert’s last match as Gladbach’s coach ended in a 2–1 loss against VfL Wolfsburg and they are just three points ahead of the relegation playoff.

52-year-old Dieter Hecking began his coaching career in 2000 with a second tier club SC Verl. Hecking played most of his professional career matches in 2. Bundesliga.

In 2003–04, Hecking guided VfB Lübeck in DFB Pokal semifinal. He helped 1. FC Nürnberg avoid relegation in 2009–10 and finished sixth in the Bundesliga in the following season. In 2014–15, Hecking won the DFB Pokal and the DfL-Supercup with Wolfsburg and finished the Bundesliga season as runners-up. They qualified for last season’s UEFA Champions League. Hecking was sacked from Wolfsburg in October.

Mönchengladbach’s sporting director Max Eberl said, “We wanted to add fresh impetus after the developments of recent weeks with a new coach. Dieter Hecking is exactly the right man for that. He is a coach with a lot of experience, who has had a lot of success at different levels with different clubs” ((de))German language: ?Nach der Entwicklung der letzten Wochen wollen wir mit einem neuen Trainer einen neuen Impuls setzen. Dafür ist Dieter Hecking genau der richtige Mann, ein Trainer mit viel Erfahrung, der auf unterschiedlichem Niveau mit verschiedenen Vereinen sehr erfolgreich gearbeitet hat.

Baby in California born with 12 functioning fingers and toes, in a rare case of polydactylism

Tuesday, February 3, 2009

A six-pound infant born in San Francisco, California has six perfectly formed and functional fingers and toes on his hands and feet, so that it isn’t considered a disability or deformity, say doctors at Saint Luke’s Hospital who were amazed by the oddity.

In a medical rarity, super baby Kamani Hubbard was born two weeks ago with 24 working digits. He is healthy and home with his parents in Daly City, California. Polydactyly, a congenital disorder is not uncommon in humans and animals, including cats, but to happen on both hands and feet is a rare hereditary condition.

“Nurses and doctors, looked so normal they couldn’t tell, they told me he was six pounds in good health, that was all they said,” said Miryoki Gross, Hubbard’s mother. Her baby’s specialness didn’t even show up on prenatal ultrasounds. “I heard nothing before I gave birth so I’m still in shock, kinda,” Gross added. Despite the mother’s shock, Kamani’s father, Kris, was the first to notice the condition.

Polydactyly (from Ancient Greek means ‘?????’ (polus) or “many” + ‘????????’ (daktulos) “finger[s]”), also known as polydactylism, sexdactyly, hexadactyly, or hexadactylism, is a congenital physical disorder consisting of supernumerary fingers or toes.

In Kamani’s case, however, all of the digits are perfectly formed and function or work normally. “I was in amazement, it took a little time for me to take it all in,” said Kris, a postal worker, who has a family history of polydactylism, but none of his relatives can remember it happening on both hands and feet.

Mostly, cases of polydactyly are surgically corrected. Kris himself had nubs of sixth digits, which were removed during his early childhood, for having been non-functional. “My son has six fingers then I saw toes, and I thought, this is quite unique. Some family members have had six fingers, not completely developed. But not the toes,” Kris noted.

“I would be tempted to leave those fingers in place. I realize children would tease each other over the slightest things, and having extra digits on each hand is more than slight. But imagine what sort of a pianist a 12-fingered person would be imagine what sort of a flamenco guitarist, if nothing else think of their typing skills,” Dr. Treece remarked.

“I just want him to see what greatness will be in store for him,” said Kris.

Fully developed and functional extra digits on both hands and feet are considered very rare as a genetic trait in medical history, amid some partial development of an extra digit occurs about twice in every 1,000 white male births. Ordinarily, polydactylism appears as an extra piece of non-functional tissue, typically occurring as an extra finger, sometimes with a bone, but no joint.

“It’s merely an interesting and beautiful variation rather than a worrisome thing,” said Dr. Michael Treece, a St. Luke’s Hospital pediatrician, and the OBGYN who delivered Kamani. He has postaxial polydactyly, which is 10 times more likely to occur in black children, and also more likely to appear in boys.

Goliath, a figure in Old Testament, was depicted as having had six fingers on each hand and six toes on each foot.

Blues guitarist Hound Dog Taylor, Get Carter, Little Tich, Toyotomi Hideyoshi and several other figures in history have had polydactyly. Sid Wilson, a turntablist of Slipknot, had been born with an extra finger and toe on his hands and feet which were removed shortly after his birth as doctors considered them to be dead.

Advantages Of One Piece Flow Lean Manufacturing Strategy

Advantages of One-Piece Flow Lean Manufacturing Strategy

by

Cristal Mcmeans

You’ve probably heard about lean manufacturing and how difficult it can be to apply the strategy to any business. However, to improve the efficiency and output quality of your business’ production processes, it might be in your best interest to learn the aspects of lean manufacturing. You will surely encounter many concepts on your way to understanding lean manufacturing. However, one concept that you should pay particular attention to is the one-piece flow strategy.

The one-piece flow strategy is practiced by many companies in the country, as it works efficiently for them. Other terms referring to the one-piece flow manufacturing strategy are single flow, make one-move one, flow manufacturing, and continuous flow. One-piece flow manufacturing allows businesses to minimize production time while improving product quality. The concept of one piece flow is to enable manufacturing parts from one section to another. The transfer of parts is on individual basis, and not carried out in batches. There are many benefits to using a one-piece flow manufacturing strategy, and, surprisingly, you don’t need to adjust production procedures to get a glimpse of the strategy’s effects. You can do so by opting for a one-piece flow game from lean manufacturing guide providers. One-piece flow games can give you a glimpse of the improved production process, which is the main result of implementing the strategy. A one piece flow game

will demonstrate how the approach can enhance the production process’ level of quality. Since parts are manufactured and transferred one by one, it paves the way for quality control to take effect. Parts can be evaluated and inspected from one section to another, assuring that quality is gradually achieved. Once product defects become evident, the problem can easily be fixed right in the section that caused the defect.

You can also save money on production costs. A one piece flow game

can demonstrate the minimized use of transporting machines used to carry and transport large amounts of parts or products. One-piece flow models also do not utilize inventories, which can be an advantage in saving costs.

Above all, the one-piece flow strategy utilizes your business’ manpower to produce quality products that meet the demand of your customers. One piece flow game

indicates the need for employees to undergo trainings, which in turn will make them more skilled when it comes to manufacturing.
